IT’S TIME TO GET GOING ON THE PEACE POSTER CONTEST

Those of you who have purchased a Peace Poster Contest Kit have probably already started on your work for this project.  If you have not purchased a kit, you can still order them from LCI until Oct. 1st. Don’t delay! The art teachers need to have the information and time to get the students working on their posters.

The theme for this year is "Vision of Peace."

In the kit, you have two papers that need to be given to the teacher. One is the official rules and guide and the other is a participant flyer that the student can take home to their parents to inform them of the contest. The other items in the kit are to be retained by the club. There is your official rules and guide to help you in judging whether the posters meet the guidelines of age of participant and size of poster. There cannot be any letters or numbers on the poster, but universal symbols, such as the peace symbol, can be used. There are also certificates for the winner and for the school or youth group. The most important piece in the kit is the sticker that is attached to the back of your winning poster. Don’t lose that one! In the past, there has been a postcard to send to the governor, so that he will be expecting your entry. That is no longer included, so I recommend you let our governor know by email that you will be sending a winner for each school that you have participating. Remember, you have to have a kit for each school.

Be sure to let the teacher know about the LCI website and how to view the pictures of the past winners. This will give the teacher a better idea of the quality it takes to win. High expectations usually get better results from the students. The teacher also needs to know when you expect to receive the posters. I would suggest November 1st, to give you time to have them judged and then to send the winning poster to the governor by November 15th. That is the deadline, as the governor needs to get those judged and the winner sent to the state chair by December 1st.

As a club, decide on what you want to award your winners and how many places will you award. I would suggest first, second, and third, but you might even want to have honorable mention winners.  Decide on what you will award, whether you award money, ribbons, or trophies. Line up your judges, but don’t ask the same teachers to judge.  They know who did each poster. Get a high school art teacher or a local artist or two, along with some of your Lions who have a good appreciation for art. Be sure they know the theme of the contest and rules, so that they will be judging according to the contest rules. Don’t forget to publicize your winning contestants. This gives an opportunity to let the community know about Lions and to give those students recognition. Good luck and I look forward to seeing your entries.
